Our Small Mammal Room which is usually filled with hedgehogs but at certain times of year is also used for squirrels, fox and badger cubs, rabbits and hares.

For most of the year our Small Mammal Room would be more appropriately named the Hedgehog Room
as it can often be housing 60 or more prickly 'guests'.
Over the winter months we can be looking after over 200 hedgehogs, not just in this room
but in pens and enclosures outside as well.
At other times of the year the room is home to squirrels, rabbits, fox and badger cubs, polecats,
hares and even the occassional skunk!
Any mammal which is still receiving treatment for its illness or injury remains in this room until it is fit enough to move to an outside enclosure or to be released.

In 2011 we treated: 63 badgers, 781 hedgehogs, 97 foxes, 33 roe deer, 110 rabbits, 2 voles, 23 fallow deer, 57 pipistrelle bats, 4 hares This is just an example of some of the many mammals cared for at Vale.

Feeding time for the hedgehogs in our care. Dozens of saucers and dishes of cat and dog food have to be prepared every day.

HEDGEHOG SUPPER TIME

Each hedgehog that needs to be kept throughout the winter months costs over £100 during its stay, excluding any treatment it may need. We regularly care for more than 150 hedgehogs over the winter which adds up to a large food bill!
